If you want to become a mortgage loan originator, the first thing you will hear about is the NMLS number. Every licensed loan officer has one. It is basically your unique ID inside the mortgage licensing system.

What an NMLS number actually is
NMLS stands for the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System. It is the national platform used to register and track mortgage professionals across the United States.
Your NMLS number is the identifier attached to your license. Lenders, regulators, and consumers can all look it up to verify that you are properly licensed.
Step 1: Create an NMLS account
The first step is creating an account inside the NMLS system. Once you register, the system assigns your NMLS ID.
Even before you are licensed, you will still receive this number once your account exists.
Step 2: Complete required education
To become a mortgage loan originator you must complete pre licensing education. Federal law requires a minimum of 20 hours of SAFE education.
These courses typically cover federal mortgage laws, ethics, loan origination, and mortgage fundamentals.
Step 3: Pass the SAFE exam
After finishing your education, you must pass the SAFE Mortgage Loan Originator test.
The exam covers federal regulations, mortgage knowledge, origination activities, and ethics. You need a score of 75 percent or higher to pass.
Step 4: Background check and fingerprints
Mortgage professionals are required to complete a criminal background check and fingerprinting process through the NMLS system.
Regulators use this step to confirm that applicants meet professional and legal standards.
Step 5: Apply for state licensing
After passing the exam and completing the required checks, you apply for a mortgage loan originator license in the state where you plan to work.
Each state reviews your application and determines whether to approve your license.
How long the process usually takes
Most people complete the process in a few weeks to a couple of months depending on how quickly they finish education and pass the exam.
The SAFE test is usually the biggest hurdle, which is why most candidates spend the majority of their time preparing for it.
